This how Americans are doing regarding their retirement.
According to one study, the median balance of workers' retirement accounts — including 401(k)s, IRAs, etc. — is $63,000. By age group, the data looks like this:
People in their 20s have a median retirement savings of $16,000.
For people in their 30s it's $45,000.
For people in their 40s it's $63,000.
For people in their 50s it's $117,000.
For people in their 60s it's $172,00
The traditional defined pension plans are gone for pretty much every company unless you work for Uncle Sam. There are a few left but not that many; however, my client is one of the suckers
It is very true, we have the Social Security benefit once you reach age of 62. But you have to wait until 66 or even 67, which depends on what year you were born, to collect 100% Social Security benefit. If you start collecting at age of 62, you will get 28% discount.
The maximum security benefit this year is around $2700 (per month) for full retirement benefit. It is also true that your spouse can collect 50% for her spousal social benefit even she or he has never worked for a single day.
Here is my optimized calculation, if you and your spouse both hit full retirement age and collect the maximum social security benefit,
$2700 + $1300 (Spousal benefit) = $4000. You annual income will be $48000 if you don't have any other sources of income.
Btw, you still need to pay tax on Social Security benefit. If couple file jointly, If your combined income exceeds $32000 per year, you need to pay Federal and state income tax.
The national medium income is $54000 per family. Your retirement income is less than the medium income if you only depends on the social security income.
American are doomed, aren't we? No wonder there are so many Taiwanese going back to Taiwan for their retirement.
Btw, we have the medical care after we reach age 65 but I still have to pay a few hundred dollars to buy the Part B, C and D.

The bottom line is if you are rich or very poor, America is a paradise for you. For the middle class people, we are just fucked. Period.
